How can I use Golfshot to manage my USGA® Handicap?

Golfshot has teamed up with the Northern California Golf Association (NCGA) to let Pro members manage their official Handicap Index® directly from Golfshot! Pro members can link an existing GHIN® Number to their Golfshot account and post scores straight to the USGA®.

What is a GHIN® Number?

GHIN® stands for Golf Handicap and Information Network®, a service offered by the USGA® to help golfers maintain an official Handicap Index®. A GHIN® Number is like your personal handicap account number with the USGA®. You can use this number to post scores to your Handicap Index® from your home golf club, online, or from any USGA® licensed club in America.

I don’t have a GHIN® Number. How can I get one?

You must be a member of a USGA® licensed golf club in order to obtain a GHIN® Number. For a list of USGA® authorized golf associations and their member clubs, please visit the USGA® golf association directory.

With Golfshot, maintaining your official Handicap Index® has never been easier. Once you’ve linked your GHIN® Number, rounds played with Golfshot can be posted to the USGA® directly from the app. This means no more trips to the clubhouse, and no more crumpled scorecards in your back pocket!

Only Pro members can link an existing GHIN® Number to Golfshot. You can purchase a Pro membership as an in-app upgrade or by visiting the Join Now page.

Once you’re a Golfshot Pro membership, simply tap USGA® Handicap on the Golfshot home screen and follow the instructions for linking your GHIN® Number.

That’s it. Now you can maintain your official Handicap Index® directly from Golfshot!

Am I a good enough golfer for this?

You don’t have to be a professional to maintain an official Handicap Index®. In fact, an official Handicap Index® can open the door to new opportunities and help level the playing field out on the course. Once you’ve established a handicap, you can enter tournaments, join leagues, and compete against golfers of all skill levels.

Can I post past Golfshot rounds to my Handicap Index®?

Yes! Any Golfshot round played on a course with an official USGA® slope and rating can be posted directly to your Handicap Index®.

I’ve linked my GHIN® number, but Golfshot says I have “No Handicap.” What does this mean?

You must post at least 5 scores to the USGA® in order to establish an official Handicap Index®.

I’ve posted a few scores, but my Handicap Index® hasn’t changed, or my handicap shows as "Handicap Pending." Why is that?

You must post at least 5 scores before the USGA® can calculate your Handicap Index®. Once you’ve posted 5 scores, your official Handicap Index® will be updated according to a revision schedule determined by the regional golf association your golf club belongs to. Typically, your Handicap Index® will be recalculated about once every two weeks. Check with your club to determine its specific revision schedule.

Why aren't all of my Golfshot rounds listed for score posting to my Handicap Index®?

There are two primary reasons your Golfshot round might not be listed for posting:

  • Your round was only 9 holes.
  • The course you played does not have an official USGA® slope and rating.

There may be rare cases where a round played on a course with a USGA® slope and rating is still not listed for posting. This typically happens when teeboxes have changed since you played your round in a way that Golfshot has a hard time understanding. You can contact support@golfshot.com and we will help you resolve these issues.

Why have some of my scores on certain holes been adjusted to a lower score?

In order to minimize the effects of one bad hole, or one bad round on your overall Handicap Index®, the USGA® employs a system known as Equitable Stroke Control (ESC). The ESC formula considers both your current handicap and the difficulty of the course you are playing to determine a maximum number of strokes that can count towards your overall score on each hole during a round. For example, ESC might dictate that a mid-handicap golfer, playing a course of average difficulty, take no more than a 7 on any hole on the course.

Why can’t users under the age of 18 use this feature?

Unfortunately, Golfshot does not support an official Handicap Index® for junior golfers at this time. If you are a junior golfer, and you would like to use Golfshot to maintain your Handicap Index®, we’d love to hear from you. Please contact support@golfshot.com to let us know you’re out there.
